MASH’s recovery values emphasize health, home, purpose, and community. Successful sober homes establish and reinforce healthy lifestyles, provide a safe and stable place to live, conduct meaningful activities, and build relationships and social networks for support. Through our network of certified sober housing and empirically based recovery principles, MASH’s goal is to help create and foster these safe living environments for those with substance use disorders.

We expect our residents to be actively involved in an individual recovery plan. We facilitate in- house AA and NA meetings, and all residents are subject to supervised drug and alcohol testing. A policy and practice that residents be informed of payments from 3rd party payers for any fees paid on their behalf.
We are deeply committed to supporting individuals in recovery, and we understand the importance of this scholarship to many of you. We are taking this time to review and process the current applications. The scholarship is a valuable resource for those in recovery who may face financial barriers in accessing safe and supportive living environments as they continue on their journey toward sustained sobriety. 29.d Documentation that residents are formally linked with the community such as job search, education, family services, health and/or housing programs. In 2007, eight sober home operators established the nonprofit Massachusetts Alliance for Sober Housing. Legislation in 2014 created voluntary certification of Massachusetts sober homes, and MASH began managing voluntary statewide sober home certification in 2016.
State Certification for Sober Living Homes in Massachusetts is Optional – But There’s a Catch
Beware NIMBY resistance to sober living homes in Massachusetts. In Methuen, a husband-wife team was harassed by the city with several lengthy requests mash sober housing for code-related information and inspections. This is not usual in Massachusetts, where the broader community is skeptical about recovery housing.
Policies and procedures that serve the priority population, which at a minimum include persons in recovery from substance use but may also include other demographic criteria. Job descriptions require staff to facilitate access to local community-based resources. Evidence that staff are supported in maintaining appropriate boundaries according to a code of conduct. Evidence that management supports staff members maintaining self-care. Verification that written resident’s rights and requirements (e.g. residence rules and grievance process) are posted or otherwise available in common areas. Search our directory to find a list of all MASH-certified sober homes. All MASH-certified sober homes follow the National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR) standards and have been independently inspected. It can be very difficult to find funding for sober living home projects in any state, and Massachusetts is no different. It’s worth keeping an eye on this agency to see if they’ll make a similar move in the future.
Policies and procedures for ongoing performance development of staff appropriate to staff roles and residence level. Cultural responsiveness and competence training or certification are provided. 10.a Policies that value individuals chosen for leadership roles who are versed and trained in the Social Model of recovery and best practices of the profession. Evidence that staff are encouraged to have a network of support. Prior to the initial acceptance of any funds, the operator must inform applicants of all fees and charges for which they will be, or could potentially be, responsible. This information needs to be in writing and signed by the applicant.
Guests feel safe, comfortable and supported at all times. 29.e Documentation that resident and staff engage in community relations and interactions to promote kinship with other recovery communities and goodwill for recovery services. A weekly schedule details recovery support services, events and activities. Job descriptions include staff responsibilities, eligibility, and knowledge, skills and abilities needed to deliver services.
